Why do backups?

If you are a small business

The key questions for small businesses are:
1. Could your company survive if you lost all of your data?
Chances are, the answer is no.
2. How much do you want to spend re-creating work?
A word of caution, it will be a lot.

Did you know that the desktops and laptops in a typical company, of any size, holds upwards of 80% of the company's critical data? And did you also know over 90% of those machines are not properly backed up, putting that data at risk? According to a University of Texas study, small businesses are particularly at risk. The study found that over half the small businesses that lost their critical data were out of business within two years. They just could not recover. Part of the reason is in the cost of recovery of data. Some analysts have shown that it costs $19K and takes 21 days to re-create accounting data. It can also cost a small company as much as $10,000 per day in lost revenue while they are focused on retrieving their data. When looked at in total, lost data equals lost revenue and business.

Comprehensive backups are a necessity for all companies - particularly small, growing ones.

If you are a telecommuter
Chances are your company has a robust backup option through a shared drive on one of the corporate servers. The problem is, you work from home and accessing that server is not always easy.

Our backup service allows you to access your files from any Internet-ready machine - anywhere in the world. It is always available to you. So not only are your files being automatically backed up throughout the day, if anything happens to your laptop while traveling, you can still access your files and continue to work.

If you are a home computer user
Should a home computer user think about backing up their computer files? It all depends on how you answer a few questions.

  • Do you use Quicken, Money, or any other money management software?
  • Do you depend on that information for tax preparation and family planning?
  • Are you a writer or are you compiling your family genealogy?
  • Do you take lots of digital photographs?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then even as a homeowner you need to be backing up your critical data. Imagine if your hard drive died and you lost all of your Quicken files…or those great photographs of the kids.

Security

Security is a concern to everyone. dlxEasyBackup uses Novell's iFolder technology. Novell iFolder has two levels of security. First, Novell eDirectory prevents unwanted access to an iFolder account. Second, iFolder uses Blowfish 128-bit key encryption to encrypt the actual files while delivered over the Net and while on the server. Only the owner of the file will be able to decrypt and view the file. If you access files via the Web, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is also used.
