Microsoft fixes month-old WSUS patch snafu
Microsoft has confirmed that they will be issuing a fix for an unspecified bug that has blocked users from “grabbing security patches through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) for several weeks” (Keizer, Gregg. “Microsoft fixes month-old WSUS patch snafu”. ComputerWorld. (10 July 2008). 28 August 2008. http://computerworld.com/action/article.) Computers with Office 2003 were not able to get updates from their WSUS servers because of the bug. Microsoft was unsure if the bug was related in any way to the recent revision of Office 2003 Service Pack 1; however, they have recently confirmed that the WSUS bug is related. The bug causes WSUS 3.0 servers “to incorrectly synchronize the revised update with the update’s approvals”. Right now the patch is available through manual download only. When it is “released through WU/WSUS, it will be a mandatory update” and will be approved by default.
